Can Your Car Tow It? VANTURE's Free Tow Compatibility Tool

Towing a caravan is one of the biggest decisions you'll make as an RV owner. Get it wrong, and you're looking at a dangerous, uncomfortable, and potentially illegal setup. Get it right, and you'll enjoy years of safe, stress-free travel across Australia.

That's why we built the VANTURE Tow Compatibility Tool — a free feature that instantly tells you whether your car can safely tow any caravan or camper trailer listed on our marketplace.

Why Towing Capacity Matters

Every year, Australian roads see accidents caused by overloaded tow setups. The main culprits are exceeding your vehicle's maximum towing capacity (ATM) or overloading the tow ball weight. Both are legal limits set by the vehicle manufacturer — not suggestions.

From VANTURESort your caravan finance before you buy

Your tow vehicle has two key limits you need to know:

  • Maximum Towing Capacity (ATM): The heaviest trailer your vehicle can legally tow, fully loaded with water, gear, and passengers. This is the trailer's weight, not your car's.

  • Maximum Tow Ball Weight: The downward force the trailer tongue exerts on your tow ball. Too much and your rear axle is overloaded. Too little and the trailer will sway.

Exceeding either limit is illegal in all Australian states and territories, and it voids your insurance if you have an accident.

How VANTURE's Tow Compatibility Tool Works

It takes three simple steps:

Step 1: Save Your Tow Vehicle

Head to your VANTURE dashboard and search for your vehicle. We maintain a curated database of popular Australian tow vehicles with manufacturer-verified towing specs. If your vehicle isn't listed, you can enter the specs manually from your owner's manual or compliance plate.

Step 2: Browse Listings

Once your tow vehicle is saved, every listing on VANTURE automatically shows a compatibility badge:

  • Green — Safe to Tow: Your vehicle comfortably handles this van's ATM and ball weight, with margin to spare.

  • Amber — Check Carefully: Your vehicle can technically tow this van, but you're close to the limit. Factor in water, gear, and passengers before committing.

  • Red — Over Capacity: This van exceeds your vehicle's towing limits. Do not tow it with your current setup.

Step 3: Filter by What You Can Tow

On the browse page, toggle "Show only what I can tow" to instantly filter out every listing that exceeds your vehicle's capacity. No more falling in love with a van you can't tow.

Smart Enquiries with Tow Context

When you send an enquiry on a listing, your tow vehicle details are automatically included. This means the seller knows exactly what you're driving — so they can answer questions about compatibility, recommend upgrades, or suggest alternative models that suit your setup.

Common Australian Tow Vehicles and Their Limits

Here are some of the most popular tow vehicles on Australian roads and what they can handle:

  • Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series: 3,500 kg ATM / 350 kg ball weight — the gold standard for heavy caravans

  • Ford Ranger / Toyota HiLux: 3,500 kg ATM / 350 kg ball weight — popular dual-cab utes that handle most mid-size vans

  • Toyota Prado 150 Series: 3,000 kg ATM / 300 kg ball weight — great all-rounder for family caravans

  • Mitsubishi Pajero Sport: 3,100 kg ATM / 310 kg ball weight — capable mid-range option

  • Toyota RAV4: 1,500 kg ATM / 150 kg ball weight — suitable for small camper trailers and pop-tops only

  • Subaru Outback: 2,000 kg ATM / 200 kg ball weight — limited to lightweight caravans and camper trailers

These are general figures. Always check your specific model and year — specs vary between engine types, transmissions, and trim levels.
