Do I need an electric brake controller, and which type is best?

Picking up my first van soon and I've been told I need a brake controller fitted in the car. Is that always required, and what's the difference between the cheaper proportional units and the fancier ones? Want to get it sorted before I tow anything.

If your van has electric brakes (most do above a certain weight), then yes — you legally need a brake controller in the tow vehicle, and it's a genuine safety essential, not an optional extra. Proportional controllers sense your car's braking and apply the van's brakes smoothly in proportion, which is far nicer to drive and easier on everyone than basic time-based units. Whichever you choose, have it professionally installed and calibrated, then do a few test stops in a quiet area to set the gain before your first real trip.
