What causes caravan sway, and how do I stop it?

The thing that scares me most about towing is the van swaying at highway speed. What actually causes it, and what's the best way to prevent it — is it weight distribution, tyre pressures, speed, a sway-control hitch, or all of the above?

Sway usually comes down to weight and balance more than anything. Too little weight on the towball (loading heavy gear at the back of the van), overloading, high speeds, and strong side winds or truck bow-waves all trigger it. Prevention: load heavy items low and over the axles, aim for the correct towball download (commonly around 10% of the van's weight), don't overload, keep to sensible speeds, and consider a weight distribution hitch with sway control. If sway starts, ease off the accelerator gently, keep the wheel straight, and let it settle — don't brake hard or steer against it.
