New to all this and the free-camping world is confusing — is it actually legal, and how do you find spots that are free or cheap without ending up somewhere you're not allowed? Keen to learn how experienced travellers plan a run of overnight stops on a longer trip.

Free and low-cost camping is legal in loads of places — rest areas, showgrounds, some council-run spots, station stays and national parks — but it's location-specific, so whether you can stay always depends on the signs and local rules. The tools everyone uses are apps like WikiCamps and CamperMate: they map free camps, cheap sites, dump points, water and reviews from other travellers. Plan your day around where you'll sleep, arrive before dark, read the signage (some rest areas allow one night only), and leave it cleaner than you found it. That last habit is what keeps these spots open for the rest of us.
