Towing weights, explained simply
What can my car tow?
Your car can legally tow a caravan or camper trailer whose ATM (fully loaded weight) does not exceed the car’s braked towing capacity, and whose tow ball weight does not exceed the car’s tow ball limit. Both figures are in your car’s handbook and on the manufacturer’s specifications. Enter them above and Model Match shows every Australian caravan and camper model that fits.
What do ATM and Tare mean?
Tare is the weight of the van empty, as it left the factory. ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) is the maximum the van is allowed to weigh fully loaded — water, gas, gear and all. When matching against your car’s towing capacity, ATM is the number that matters, because you must be legal at full load.
What is tow ball weight and why does it matter?
Tow ball weight (or ball load) is the downward force the coupling puts on your car’s tow ball — commonly around 10% of the van’s loaded weight. Your car has its own tow ball limit, and it is often the binding constraint before towing capacity. A car rated to tow 3,500 kg with a 350 kg ball limit can still be over its limit with a heavy-nosed van.
Where do I find my car’s towing capacity?
Check the towing section of your owner’s handbook or the manufacturer’s specification sheet for your exact year and variant — capacities differ between model years, engines and body styles of the same nameplate, sometimes by as much as 1,000 kg. Look for the braked towing capacity and the maximum tow ball download. Your owner’s manual always overrides any figure you find online, including the guide numbers on this page.
Can I tow a caravan with a mid-size SUV?
Often, yes. Many mid-size SUVs are rated to tow between 1,500 kg and 2,500 kg braked, which covers a wide range of pop tops, camper trailers, hybrids and lighter caravans. Enter your SUV’s braked towing capacity above to see exactly which models fit.
