A basic 200W solar setup with a single 100Ah battery costs around $1,500–$2,500 installed. A full lithium off-grid system (400–600W panels, 200–300Ah lithium, inverter, DC-DC charger) ranges from $4,500 to $9,000 installed depending on brand and complexity.

For weekend trips with basic 12V use, 200W of solar and a 100Ah AGM battery is enough. For free camping with a fridge, lights and charging, plan for 400W solar and 200Ah lithium. Full off-grid living with induction cooking or air-con needs 600W+ and 300Ah+ lithium plus an inverter.

Lithium (LiFePO4) is lighter, lasts 8–10× longer, accepts faster charging and gives you full usable capacity. AGM is cheaper upfront but heavier and only ~50% usable before damage. Most installers now recommend lithium for any new build — payback is typically 3–4 years.

12V DC work generally does not require an electrical licence in Australia, but anything 240V (inverters wired into the van's AC circuits, or grid-tied) must be done by a licensed electrician. Always confirm credentials and ask for a certificate of compliance for AC work.
