First check the water tank has water and the inlet filter is clear. Then check all pipe joints for air leaks — even a small leak will stop a 12V pump priming. If the pump runs but doesn't move water, the pump itself likely needs replacement (typical life: 3–7 years).

A standard Suburban or Truma gas/electric hot water system costs $900–$1,600 supplied and installed. Instantaneous gas units (no tank) cost $700–$1,200. Lifespan is typically 8–12 years.

Only if the tank is food-grade (most are), the pipes are food-grade poly, and you sanitise the system regularly (every 6 months) with a water-system cleaner. Many travellers fit an inline carbon filter or only drink bottled water as an extra precaution.
