Every campervan built for Australian roads carries a compliance plate with the build date, VIN and weights. Check the ATM and tare on the plate match the advertisement and the registration papers. A missing plate, or one that does not match the paperwork, is the fastest reason to walk away.
Water ingress is the most expensive fault to repair and the easiest to hide. Press firmly around every window, hatch and join, check the corners of cupboards and under the bed for staining, and trust your nose — a musty smell means moisture. Ask when the seals were last replaced.
A campervan that has sat unused for years is often in worse shape than one with high kilometres. Ask for the logbook, check the odometer reads against the service stamps, and look for even tyre wear plus a recent major service or timing-belt record.
Test the fridge on both 240V and gas, run the hot water, and check the air conditioning, lights, water pump and any awning or roof mechanism. Ask to see a current gas compliance certificate — several states require one when a second-hand campervan changes hands.
Confirm the registration is current and matches the VIN, then run a PPSR check before any money moves — it shows whether finance is owing or the vehicle has been written off or stolen. Never pay a deposit on a campervan you have not seen in person.
