Can you legally live in a caravan full-time in Australia?

We're seriously considering selling up and living in the van full-time, either travelling or parked on family land for a while. Is that actually legal, and what catches people out — council rules, parking it on private property, that kind of thing? Would love to hear from anyone actually doing it.
