National parks vs free camps vs caravan parks — what should I expect from each?

Planning our first big trip and trying to picture the mix of places we'll stay. For those who've done plenty of nights in each — what do you actually get (and give up) with national parks versus free camps versus caravan parks? Trying to plan a realistic blend rather than assuming they're interchangeable.
