What Does a Caravan Road Trip Really Cost in 2026? The Honest Australian Budget Breakdown

Part 1: The Capital Cost — Buying the Van

The caravan dealer market in Australia is worth $3.3 billion (IBISWorld, 2025), with 531 businesses competing for your purchase. That's a lot of choice — and a lot of price variation. Here's what the market actually looked like in 2025:

New Caravans

Entry-level on-road (16–18 ft): $35,000–$55,000
The basics done well. Single axle, comfortable layout, adequate solar. Brands like Jayco Journey, Coromal, and Fantasy Caravan sit in this range. Good for weekend warriors and first-time buyers.

Mid-range family van (18–21 ft): $55,000–$90,000
Proper ensuite, island bed, good solar and battery setup, twin axle. The biggest selling segment in Australia. Jayco Silverline, Lotus Caravans, and Crusader Caravans occupy this space.

Premium and off-road (any length): $90,000–$160,000+
Full off-road capability, independent suspension, large lithium battery banks, premium fit-out. For serious remote travel, the capability is worth it.

Used Caravans

Buying used well can save you $15,000–$40,000 against new, and a well-maintained two or three-year-old van will have already taken the steepest depreciation hit (typically 15–20% in the first year). The risk is condition — which is why a proper pre-purchase inspection is essential. More on that in our buyer's checklist →

Part 2: Setting Up to Tow

The van purchase price is only part of the capital outlay. If your tow vehicle isn't already configured for towing, budget for:

ItemTypical cost

Towbar installation$600–$1,500
Weight distribution hitch (if van ATM > 2,000 kg)$800–$2,000 installed
Electric brake controller$200–$600 installed
Towing mirrors (extended)$80–$400
GVM upgrade (if needed)$2,000–$5,000
Reversing camera upgrade$200–$600

For most buyers setting up a mid-range family van, expect to add $2,000–$5,000 to the total cost before you've driven anywhere. If a GVM upgrade is needed, that increases significantly.

Part 3: On-the-Road Costs Per Week

This is where the real variation lives. Here's a structured comparison across three travel styles for a couple travelling together:

CategoryBudgetMid-RangeComfort

Fuel$200–$280$300–$400$400–$550
Campsites$0–$70$100–$250$250–$420
Groceries$150–$200$220–$300$300–$450
Activities / entry fees$20–$50$80–$150$150–$300
Eating out / coffee$30–$60$80–$150$150–$300
Miscellaneous$30–$60$60–$100$100–$200
Weekly total$430–$720$840–$1,350$1,350–$2,220

A note on fuel: towing increases fuel consumption by 25–40% compared to driving unladen. In a diesel 4WD towing a 2,500 kg van at highway speed, expect to use 15–22 litres per 100 km depending on terrain, speed, and van drag profile. Use FuelMap to find the cheapest diesel along your route — in regional and remote areas, the price difference between adjacent towns can be 20–40 cents per litre.

A note on campsites: budget travellers who use free camp apps and are self-sufficient can spend very little on accommodation. A week of free camping is achievable in most parts of Australia. Comfort travellers who prefer powered sites at full-facility caravan parks in popular locations will pay $40–$60 per night, more in peak season in sought-after spots.

Part 4: The Costs People Forget

These are the expenses that don't appear in most budget guides — but they're real.

Caravan insurance: $800–$2,500 per year depending on the van's value and level of cover. Most people don't realise their home and contents policy doesn't cover the van while it's travelling. You need a standalone caravan insurance policy. Budget Direct, NRMA, and CMCA-affiliated insurers all offer dedicated caravan products. Don't skip this.

Roadside assistance membership: NRMA, RACQ, RAA, RAC (WA), and AANT (NT) all offer roadside assistance covering you and your van across Australia. Annual cost: $200–$400 depending on cover level. Essential. A breakdown in the Kimberley or on the Nullarbor without assistance membership is expensive and stressful.

Tyre replacement: Your tow vehicle is working harder than usual; towing adds significant load. Budget for more frequent servicing and careful tyre monitoring. Full tyre replacement on a 4WD: $1,200–$2,500.

Caravan maintenance: Budget $1,500–$3,000 per year for a van in regular use — wheel bearing repacks, brake adjustments, seal checks, and fixing the inevitable small things that break.

Annual van registration: Typically $200–$600 per year depending on state and van weight.

Part 5: Real Numbers for a 3-Month Big Lap (Couple)

CategoryBudgetMid-RangeComfort

Fuel (~6,000 km)$3,500$5,000$7,000
Campsites (mix free/paid)$500$2,500$5,500
Groceries$2,500$3,500$5,000
Activities and experiences$500$2,000$4,500
Eating out and social$600$2,000$4,500
Miscellaneous and contingency$500$1,000$2,000
Insurance and membership (pro-rated)$300$400$600
90-day total~$8,400~$16,400~$29,100

For context: a 14-night European holiday for two in peak season — flights, accommodation, activities — commonly runs $8,000–$15,000. A three-month caravan trip covering thousands of kilometres of the country costs roughly the same or less at mid-range. The key difference is the capital cost of the van up front. But that capital doesn't disappear — you own an asset you can sell later.

Part 6: Making the Purchase Accessible — Caravan Finance

The biggest barrier for most buyers isn't affordability over time. It's the upfront capital requirement. A $75,000 van is a significant lump sum even for people who could comfortably afford the weekly repayments.

VANTURE's embedded finance partner connects buyers with 30+ lenders. Pre-approval takes minutes and has no impact on your credit score. Rates and repayments are shown directly on VANTURE listings — so you can compare your purchasing options in the same moment you're looking at a listing.

A few things to understand about caravan loans:

  • Secured vs unsecured: Secured loans typically offer lower rates. Most caravan-specific finance is secured.

  • Current rates: Recreational vehicle loan rates typically run higher than home loan rates. Get pre-approval from a specialist rather than assuming your bank is competitive.

  • Loan term: Standard terms run 3–7 years. Longer terms reduce weekly repayments but increase total interest paid.

Part 7: How to Stretch Your Budget on the Road

  • Free camp more. WikiCamps, Campedia, and Campermate map thousands of free camping spots across Australia. A week of free camping is achievable in most regions and dramatically cuts accommodation costs.

  • Stock up in larger towns. Groceries in remote areas carry a significant price premium — sometimes 30–50% more. Plan your food resupply around larger regional centres.

  • National park annual passes. Individual park entry fees add up fast on a long lap. Check Parks Australia's national pass and state-specific options.

  • Fuel strategy. Download FuelMap before you leave. Plan fill-ups for the cheapest stations and always top up before leaving a major town heading somewhere remote.

  • Grey nomad discounts. Many caravan parks and tour operators offer Senior Card or pensioner discounts that aren't advertised. Ask.

The Bottom Line

A full Big Lap for a couple — 10–12 months on the road — costs between $40,000 and $120,000 in total spending, with most comfortable travellers sitting in the $60,000–$85,000 range for the year. That's roughly $5,000–$7,000 per month all-in for two people, travelling across one of the most spectacular countries on earth.

It is not cheap. But for the people who do it, almost universally, the return on that investment is measured in something other than dollars.
