Caravans Under 1,500 kg ATM: 10 Vans You Can Tow With a Popular SUV

Here's the question behind a huge share of first-van conversations: "Can I tow a caravan with the car I already own?"
Not a LandCruiser. Not a Ram. The car in the driveway — a Toyota RAV4, a Mazda CX-5, a Nissan X-Trail, a Subaru Forester, a Hyundai Tucson. The mid-size SUVs Australia actually buys, by the hundreds of thousands.
The honest answer is: quite possibly, yes — if you shop by weight from the start. There's a genuine class of Australian-market caravans built around an ATM of 1,500 kg or less, and it's bigger and better than most people expect: real caravans, most with a proper ensuite, some sleeping four or five. We've pulled ten of them from VANTURE's model database — which holds verified specs for over 4,200 models across 300+ brands — every figure below checked against the manufacturer's numbers we hold, not guessed.
But first, the two-minute homework that makes the whole list useful.
Before the list: what your SUV can actually tow
Three checks, in order. Our complete GVM, GCM and ATM guide covers each in depth, but here's the short version:
1. Your variant's braked towing capacity — from the handbook, not the badge. This is the big one, and it's where people get burned: the same model name can carry very different ratings depending on engine, drivetrain and model year. A petrol variant and its hybrid sibling can be rated hundreds of kilograms apart; an older generation can differ again. The number that matters is in your car's handbook and on your compliance documentation. If it says 1,500 kg braked or more, every van on this list is in the conversation. If it says less — some still are.
2. Your towball download limit. Every tow-equipped car also has a maximum ball weight — often around 10% of the tow rating, sometimes less (No one can explain why vehicle manufacturers are allowed to get away with it — a car rated to tow 2,000 kg but capped at 75 kg on the ball is probably a bad tow car. I digress.). The van's loaded ball weight has to sit under it, and that ball weight also counts toward your car's payload, along with your passengers and luggage.
3. The van's ATM, not its tare. ATM — Aggregate Trailer Mass — is the van's maximum legal weight fully loaded, and it's the number to compare against your tow rating. Tare is the empty weight; nobody tows an empty van. Everything below is listed by ATM for exactly that reason, with tare and the payload between them shown so you can see what each van really gives you.
One more honest note: a legal match and a comfortable match aren't always the same thing. Leaving a margin between the van's ATM and your car's maximum makes every kilometre more relaxed — many experienced towers deliberately buy well under their limit.
Ten caravans with an ATM of 1,500 kg or less
All figures from VANTURE's model database. Payload = ATM minus tare. Always confirm current specs with the manufacturer or dealer — figures change between model years — and weigh your actual van once it's loaded.
1. Euro Caravans Glider — 900 kg ATM
Tare 640 kg · ATM 900 kg · Payload 260 kg · Sleeps 2 · Ensuite — full specs · live listings
The lightest van on this list with a bathroom on board — at 900 kg ATM, the Glider undercuts the tare of most conventional caravans. This is the territory where even many small SUVs and mid-size sedans enter the conversation, subject to that handbook check. Euro's Hobby stablemate offers the same 900 kg ATM with a singles-or-double layout choice.
2. Carpento 310S — 1,000 kg ATM
Tare 720 kg · ATM 1,000 kg · Payload 280 kg · Sleeps 2 · Ensuite — full specs · live listings
Readers of our small caravans with an ensuite guide have met this one — a tonne, all in, with a real bathroom. The quiet surprise is the range around it: the 360D sleeps three and the 410 sleeps five — all three at the same 1,000 kg ATM. A five-berth van at a tonne is one of the more remarkable numbers in our whole database.
3. Goldy Caravans Goldy Getaway — 1,250 kg ATM
Tare 850 kg · ATM 1,250 kg · Payload 400 kg · Sleeps 2 — full specs · live listings
A light couples' tourer with the best payload-to-tare ratio at the small end of this list — 400 kg of capacity on an 850 kg van means it hauls its own weight in gear, water and supplies almost half over again. No internal bathroom on this one; if that's a dealbreaker, its neighbours on this list have you covered.
4. Swift Sprite Alpine 2 — 1,250 kg ATM
Tare 1,042 kg · ATM 1,250 kg · Payload 208 kg · Sleeps 2 · Ensuite — full specs · live listings
Swift's touring pedigree in a two-berth package that stays under 1,250 kg fully loaded, ensuite included. The payload is the tightest on this list at 208 kg, so it suits travellers who pack light and fill water near camp. Families should look one door down: the Sprite Alpine 4 sleeps four at 1,300 kg ATM, and the Sprite Major 4 SB sleeps four at 1,500 kg with a healthier 264 kg of payload.
5. Adria Action 361LT — 1,400 kg ATM
Tare 1,000 kg · ATM 1,400 kg · Payload 400 kg · Sleeps 2 · Ensuite — full specs · live listings
European lightweight design with an unusually generous equation: a tonne of van, 400 kg of payload, and an ensuite, all inside 1,400 kg ATM. That combination — light tare and big payload and a bathroom — is exactly what this class finds hardest to deliver, and the Action is one of the few that manages all three.
6. Avan 400 Series — 1,500 kg ATM
Tare 1,070 kg · ATM 1,500 kg · Payload 430 kg · Sleeps 2 · Ensuite — full specs · live listings
Avan has been the name in light Australian touring for decades, and the 400 Series is that philosophy with a bathroom: 430 kg of payload under a 1,500 kg ceiling from one of the most established brands in the class — with a dealer network to match.
7. Fantasy Caravan Mystic Series 12 & 12F — 1,500 kg ATM
Tare 1,150 kg · ATM 1,500 kg · Payload 350 kg · Sleeps 2 · Ensuite — full specs · live listings
Another crossover from the ensuite list, and it earns its second appearance: 350 kg of payload with the classic compact layout — Full double bed (Mystic 12) or convertible dinette (Mystic 12F), corner ensuite, mid kitchenette — under a 1,500 kg ATM.
8. Century Trailers Venus 11 (Discontinued) — 1,500 kg ATM
Tare 1,080 kg · ATM 1,500 kg · Payload 420 kg · Sleeps 2 · Ensuite — full specs · live listings
The Venus 11's party trick is its two interior configurations — lounge-focused or bed-focused from the same shell — and at 1,080 kg tare with 420 kg of payload, it's a flexible van that stays honest to the 1,500 kg ceiling.
9. Wild Boar Campers Road Trotter — 1,500 kg ATM
Tare 1,090 kg · ATM 1,500 kg · Payload 410 kg · Sleeps 2 · Ensuite — full specs · live listings
For the couple whose map includes gravel: the Road Trotter brings hybrid-style touring to the sub-1,500 kg class with an ensuite on board and 410 kg of payload for the extra gear that kind of travel demands. If your trips lean this way, weigh up the whole off-road question — capability always costs weight somewhere.
10. Trackstar Campers Starliner — 1,500 kg ATM
Tare 1,200 kg · ATM 1,500 kg · Payload 300 kg · Sleeps 2 · Ensuite — full specs · live listings
Rounding out the ten, the Starliner packs an ensuite into a compact tourer at 1,200 kg tare. The 300 kg payload asks for a little packing discipline — but as with everything on this list, the whole van stays inside the envelope a well-matched mid-size SUV can handle.
Reading the list: three patterns worth noticing
Payload varies more than ATM. These ten span 208 kg to 430 kg of payload — more than double — inside the same weight class. If you free-camp with full water tanks, that difference is the decision.
The ensuite is not the sacrifice it used to be. Eight of the ten carry a real bathroom under 1,500 kg ATM. A decade of lightweight construction has quietly moved that goalpost.
Light vans reward the same discipline as big ones. A sub-1,500 kg van can still be overloaded — 280 kg disappears fast once water, gas, an awning's worth of chairs and two e-bikes come aboard. A public weighbridge visit with the van loaded is cheap certainty, and inspection and weighing services are listed on VANTURE.
The takeaway
You don't necessarily need a new tow car to join the caravanning life — you may just need to shop by ATM from day one. Ten vans here stay inside 1,500 kg fully loaded; your handbook tells you which of them your SUV is rated to take; and the payload column tells you which one matches how you actually travel.
