Can a Ford Ranger Tow a 3,500 kg Caravan? The Reality Check, Using Ford's Own Numbers

"Can a Ford Ranger tow a 3.5-tonne caravan?" gets asked and assumed at every caravan show, on every forum, and at a lot of kitchen tables. The short answer is that Ford rates almost every Ranger to tow 3,500 kg with trailer brakes. The longer answer — and the one that decides whether your Ranger, with your family and your gear, can tow that van — takes four numbers, not one.
This is the second in our model-by-model series of towing reality checks. The first walked through the Toyota Prado. Same method here, different ute, and one finding that surprised us: which Ranger you own changes the answer by several hundred kilograms.
Everything below comes from Ford Australia's own published documents — the Ranger 2026.50MY specification brochure, Ford's Towing & Carrying guide and its Towing Pocket Guide — plus what caravans currently for sale on VANTURE actually weigh. We haven't taken a figure from a forum, a video or a mate at the weighbridge.
First, Ford's numbers
Ford publishes every Ranger's kerb weight, GVM, GCM and payload in its specification brochure, which is more than some manufacturers do. Here are the 4x4 double-cab pick-ups — the ones most caravanners tow with — from the 2026.50MY sheet:
Grade (4x4 double-cab pick-up) | Engine | Kerb weight | GVM | Payload | GCM | Braked towing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
XL | 2.0L turbo-diesel | 2,126 kg | 3,250 kg | 1,124 kg | 6,200 kg | 3,500 kg |
XL | 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel | 2,215 kg | 3,350 kg | 1,135 kg | 6,400 kg | 3,500 kg |
Black Edition | 2.0L turbo-diesel | 2,190 kg | 3,250 kg | 1,060 kg | 6,200 kg | 3,500 kg |
Black Edition | 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel | 2,254 kg | 3,350 kg | 1,096 kg | 6,400 kg | 3,500 kg |
XLT | 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel | 2,251 kg | 3,350 kg | 1,099 kg | 6,400 kg | 3,500 kg |
Wolftrak | 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel | 2,295 kg | 3,350 kg | 1,055 kg | 6,400 kg | 3,500 kg |

Three things stand out before we do any arithmetic.
The Raptor is the exception. It's rated to tow 2,500 kg, not 3,500 kg, and its GCM is 5,400 kg. It's a superb vehicle for what it's built for; towing a heavy tandem-axle van isn't that. If you're shopping Rangers with a caravan in mind, that's the grade to read carefully.
Payload shrinks as the grade goes up. An XL V6 carries 1,135 kg; a Platinum carries 981 kg. Same chassis, same GVM — the difference is the kit already on the vehicle. Every kilogram of factory equipment comes out of the payload before you've added a single accessory.
Ford's kerb weight is the lightest version of the vehicle. The brochure's footnote is explicit: kerb weight is measured "with the lightest possible orderable combination of factory fit equipment", and it excludes accessories. A canopy, bull bar, tow bar, drawers, a fridge slide and a second battery are all payload, not kerb weight. Ford's own advice is to weigh the vehicle before and after adding accessories — and it means it.
The four checks, in order
Ford's Towing Pocket Guide sets the whole thing out on a single page, and the logic is the same one every state road authority uses. Here's how it lands on a Ranger.
Check 1 — Is the van at or under 3,500 kg ATM?
The caravan's ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) is the most it may weigh fully loaded, and it's on the van's compliance plate. At or under 3,500 kg, the Ranger's braked towing rating is satisfied (2,500 kg on a Raptor). Also read the plate on the tow bar: Ford's brochure notes that on XLT, Wolftrak and Raptor the standard tow pack doesn't include the tow hitch itself, and the lower of the vehicle's rating and the tow bar's rating is the one that applies.
If ATM, GTM and Tare are still a blur, our ATM, GTM and Tare weight guide untangles them.
Check 2 — What does the van put on the tow ball?
Ford calls this Trailer Nose Weight, and its guide says it's "typically about 10% of the trailer's total weight when fully loaded". On a van loaded to 3,500 kg, that's around 350 kg pressing down on the back of the ute. The maximum permitted download is on the tow bar plate and in the Owner's Manual — Ford's guide sends you there rather than publishing a single figure, so we won't either. Check that the plate on your tow bar allows what your van will actually put on it.
The key sentence in Ford's guide is this one: "When the trailer is hitched to a vehicle the payload decreases by the Trailer Nose Weight." That 350 kg isn't the van's problem. It's the car's.
Check 3 — Does the car still fit inside its GVM?
Take a Ranger XLT V6, payload 1,099 kg. Hitch a van and see what's left:
Van's actual loaded weight | Ball download at 10% | Payload left for people, accessories and gear |
|---|---|---|
2,500 kg | 250 kg | 849 kg |
3,000 kg | 300 kg | 799 kg |
3,500 kg | 350 kg | 749 kg |
That's a healthy budget — a good deal healthier than a large 4WD wagon, because a ute's GVM is set up to carry a load in the tray. Two adults, a canopy, a fridge, drawers, a bull bar and a full tray of camping gear will eat into it, but on this check alone the Ranger has room to spare.
Check 4 — GCM: the combination
Here's where a 3,500 kg van gets interesting. GCM is the most the car and van may weigh together, fully loaded and hitched. Ford's Pocket Guide gives the formula plainly: GCM = GVM + GTM, where GTM is the van's weight on its own wheels (ATM minus the nose weight), and the nose weight is counted inside the vehicle's mass.
Put more simply: the car's kerb weight, plus everyone and everything in and on it, plus the van's full ATM, must not exceed GCM.
For an XLT V6 with a 6,400 kg GCM and a van loaded to 3,500 kg:
6,400 − 3,500 − 2,251 = 649 kg for people, accessories and gear.
Compare that with the 749 kg the GVM check allowed. At the top of the towing rating, GCM is the tighter limit, and it's the one people forget to run. Work the same sum backwards and you find the crossover: on a 6,400 kg GCM Ranger, GCM starts to bite before GVM once the van's loaded weight passes roughly 3,390 kg. Below that, GVM is the number to watch; above it, every extra kilogram in the van comes straight off what the ute may carry.
Here's the full picture at a 3,500 kg van, by grade:
Grade (4x4 double-cab pick-up) | GCM | What's left for people, accessories and gear at 3,500 kg |
|---|---|---|
XL 2.0L | 6,200 kg | 574 kg |
XL V6 | 6,400 kg | 685 kg |
Black Edition 2.0L | 6,200 kg | 510 kg |
Black Edition V6 | 6,400 kg | 646 kg |
XLT V6 | 6,400 kg | 649 kg |
Wolftrak | 6,400 kg | 605 kg |
Tremor | 6,400 kg | 583 kg |
Wildtrak | 6,400 kg | 569 kg |
Platinum | 6,400 kg | 531 kg |
Raptor (at its 2,500 kg limit) | 5,400 kg | 493 kg |
Our arithmetic, from Ford's published figures: GCM minus van ATM minus kerb weight. These are the GCM-limited figures; in every row they are lower than the GVM-limited figure, so they're the ones that apply at the maximum.
Two adults, a canopy, a bull bar, a tow bar, a fridge, a drawer system and a week's gear will land somewhere between 350 and 600 kg depending on how you travel — and that's before a dog, a generator or a second spare. A Platinum with 531 kg to play with is doable for a couple who pack light. A Platinum with a family, a full canopy and every accessory in the catalogue, towing a van loaded right to 3,500 kg, is a weighbridge conversation.
Our complete GVM, GCM and ATM guide has a two-scenario worked example of the same arithmetic if you'd like to see it laid out step by step.
Which Ranger? The number that changed
This is the part worth reading twice if you're buying a used ute to tow with — and a lot of Australians are.
Ford's Ranger specification sheet dated June 2020 lists the 4x4 XLT double-cab pick-up with a GCM of 6,000 kg and a GVM of 3,200 kg, kerb weight in the 2,190–2,230 kg range depending on engine and transmission. Run the same sum on that vehicle with a 3,500 kg van:
6,000 − 3,500 − 2,209 = 291 kg for people, accessories and gear.
That's two adults and not much else. Same badge on the tailgate, same 3,500 kg towing rating on the brochure — and about 360 kg less room than the current XLT when towing at the maximum.
We're not saying one is a good ute and one isn't. The earlier Ranger was, and is, a hugely popular tow vehicle, and it tows a 2,500–3,000 kg van with ease. We're saying that "a Ranger can tow 3.5 tonne" is true on paper for both, and the practical answer depends on the year and grade of the Ranger in your driveway. Get the specification sheet for your exact vehicle — Ford keeps the historical brochures on its website — and read the GCM line, not just the towing line.
So — what do caravans for sale actually weigh?
The Ranger's rating is 3,500 kg. How many caravans actually need all of it?
We looked at every caravan, camper trailer and hybrid currently listed for sale on VANTURE — 399 listings on 7 September 2026, of which we could read 386 in full. Of those, 272 state a usable ATM. Across that group:
The median ATM is 2,800 kg.
39 per cent are at or under 2,500 kg, and 66 per cent are at or under 3,000 kg.
94 per cent — 257 of 272 — are at or under 3,500 kg. Nineteen vans in twenty for sale right now sit inside the Ranger's rating.
28 per cent (77 listings) sit in the 3,001–3,500 kg band — inside the rating, but in the zone where the GCM sum above starts to matter.
Only 15 listings, about 5 per cent, are rated above 3,500 kg — mostly large tandem-axle tourers and a handful of motorhomes and vans, which aren't what a Ranger owner is shopping for anyway.
Split the same group by what sellers flagged as off-road: the 119 off-road vans with a stated ATM have a median of 3,000 kg, and 47 of them exceed it; the 153 non-off-road vans have a median of 2,574 kg. That gap is chassis, suspension, tanks, batteries and the hardware underneath — and it's why the off-road question and the Ranger-GCM question so often turn up together. If that's you, our guide to what to look for on an off-road caravan is the companion piece.
You can browse by weight rather than by length: filter caravans for sale on VANTURE with the ATM in view, look at off-road caravans specifically, or start at the light end with the under-1,500 kg list.
Putting it together for a Ranger
A van at 2,500–3,000 kg ATM — two-thirds of what's on the market — is comfortable behind any current 3,500 kg-rated Ranger. GVM is the limit that applies, and it leaves 800 kg or more for people and gear on an XLT. This is where most Ranger-and-caravan pairings live, and they live there happily.
A van at 3,000–3,400 kg ATM is still inside the rating with room to spare on the current-generation vehicle. Run the GVM sum, be honest about accessories, and you'll usually find a few hundred kilograms in hand. On a 6,000 kg GCM earlier model, this is the band where the combination check needs doing properly.
A van loaded to the full 3,500 kg is legal on the rating and, on a current V6 XLT, leaves roughly 650 kg in the car. That's workable for a couple with a sensible accessory list. It gets tight with a family and a fully kitted ute, and on an earlier 6,000 kg GCM Ranger it's tight for almost everyone. In both cases, a loaded trip across a public weighbridge is the only answer that counts.
None of this is a criticism of the Ranger. On Ford's own figures, the current 4x4 double-cab is one of the more generous mainstream tow vehicles in the country once you add up payload and GCM. The reality check is simply that the brochure answers one question and the buyer is asking four.
Run the check for your own car
The method works for any tow vehicle:
Find five numbers: kerb weight, GVM, GCM, braked towing capacity, and the tow bar's plated capacity and download. Ford prints the first four in the Ranger brochure; the plate on the tow bar gives the last.
Find two on the van: ATM and, if the plate gives it, the tow ball mass at tare.
Estimate ball download at 10 per cent of the van's real loaded weight, per Ford's guide, and refine it at a weighbridge.
GVM check: payload minus ball download is your budget for people, accessories and gear.
GCM check: GCM minus the van's loaded weight minus kerb weight is your budget under the combination limit. The lower of the two budgets is the one you live with.
Weigh the lot, hitched and loaded as you'd travel. Ford's brochure says to weigh before and after adding accessories or a trailer, and that's the best advice on the page.
Ford also publishes a Payload & Towing Calculator for its own vehicles, which is a sensible first pass before you get to the weighbridge. And for the folklore you'll hear along the way — the 85 per cent rule above all — our caravan rules decoded guide separates what's law from what's habit.
Shopping by weight, not by length? Every caravan on VANTURE shows its ATM on the card. Browse caravans for sale and match the plate to your Ranger's GCM before you fall for the layout.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Ford Ranger tow 3,500 kg?
Every current Ranger except the Raptor is rated by Ford to tow 3,500 kg braked with a Genuine Ford tow pack; the Raptor is rated to 2,500 kg. Whether a particular Ranger can tow a particular 3,500 kg van also depends on its GVM, its GCM, the tow bar's plated download and what's loaded in the vehicle. See Checks 3 and 4 above.
What is the Ford Ranger's GCM?
On Ford's 2026.50MY specification sheet, the 4x4 double-cab pick-ups are listed at 6,400 kg (3.0L V6) or 6,200 kg (2.0L), with the Raptor at 5,400 kg. Ford's June 2020 sheet lists the 4x4 XLT and Wildtrak at 6,000 kg. Always read the sheet for your own model year.
Does a weight distribution hitch let a Ranger tow more?
No. It changes how the load is shared across the axles; it doesn't change GVM, GCM, towing capacity or the nose weight the vehicle has to carry. Our GVM, GCM and ATM guide explains why the numbers don't move.
Is the Ranger Raptor good for towing a caravan?
It's rated to tow 2,500 kg with a 5,400 kg GCM and a 753 kg payload. That suits a lighter van or a camper trailer comfortably; it's not the Ranger to buy for a 3-tonne tandem-axle tourer.
Do I need trailer brakes on a caravan behind a Ranger?
Any caravan you'd call a tourer is far above the unbraked limit, so yes — and above 2,000 kg GTM the brakes need a breakaway system. Our suspension, tyres and brakes guide covers what the rules ask for, and Ford's integrated trailer brake controller is part of the Ranger tow pack.
